One to One Mentoring

Big Brothers Mentoring

The Big Brothers mentoring program provides boys and young men with a role model to talk to and share the experiences of growing up with. Through regular outings, a relationship is developed between the mentor and the mentee, which is built on trust and common interests, and is supported by our experienced case-workers. The result is a life-changing experience for both the mentor and the mentee.

The Big Brothers mentoring program usually requires two regularly scheduled outings a month of a few hours each and a minimum of a one year commitment.

Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds!

-Program Currently On Hold-

SHAPE THE LIVES OF YOUNG WOMEN

Go Girls! is a group mentoring program for girls ages 10-16 that focuses on physical activity, balanced eating, and self-esteem. The single, most important goal of the program is to positively shape the lives of young women and girls by helping them build a positive self-image – setting them on a path to reach their full potential in life.

Go Girls! is a fun, recreation program designed for girls who want to participate in fun-filled physical activities, games, art projects, and interesting discussions. This is an excellent chance for girls to hang out with friends, meet new ones, and learn about healthy living in a fun, interactive, and supportive environment. They will also spend time with great leaders and mentors who are dedicated to making the program amazing!

OUR PROGRAM STRIVES TO DO THE FOLLOWING:

  • create an appreciation for the benefits of an active, healthy lifestyle
  • build an understanding of what constitutes healthy eating habits and the risks associated with eating disorders
  • promote the importance of positive mental activity and regular physical exercise
  • encourage awareness of core values, personal interests, strengths and attributes
  • support the development of leadership and life skills
  • offer guidance in establishing and maintaining friendships
  • and above all, make a difference

PROGRAM DETAILS

The Go Girls! program consists of 7 mentoring sessions, held over a 7-week period during the evenings through the ZOOM platform.

Each 1.5-2 hour-long session is loosely structured around four themes:

  • physical activity
  • healthy eating
  • self-esteem, and
  • communication skills

THE MAIN GOAL OF THE GO GIRLS! PROGRAM IS TO DEVELOP AN APPRECIATION OF THE BENEFITS OF AN ACTIVE, HEALTHY, LIFESTYLE AMONG GIRLS.

IN ADDITION, THE PROGRAM STRIVES TO ACHIEVE THE FOLLOWING KEY OBJECTIVES:

  • To support girls and young women in choosing to maintain a healthy active lifestyle.
  • To provide girls and young women with the tools and information they need to choose to lead and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  • To enhance competence, confidence, and self-esteem of girls and young women regarding healthy active living; and
  • To build the leadership and life skills of all program participants.

HOW CAN IT BE DONE ONLINE?

Fortunately, we live in a time where almost anything is possible using modern technology! Instead of meeting the mentors in person, they will use online text chat/video chat to stay connected as a group during the week using the Zoom platform.

The students accepted into the Online Go Girls will be added to a ‘Go Girls Group’ on ZOOM! Within this group, there will be weekly scheduled ZOOM video calls that the mentors will facilitate, and the girls can participate in by chatting, using the device’s microphone or video if they feel comfortable. The girls will be able to chat to their mentors and other students throughout the week. The mentors will provide conversation starters, challenges, and check-ins to keep this conversation going and positive! To provide the best environment for everyone to video chat/text chat with equally, our group sizes will only include 6-8 participants per online group.

WHAT WILL THEY BE DOING ONLINE?

The groups will be focusing on reducing stress and anxiety around COVID-19, sharing recipes, exploring new hobbies/easy crafts together, leading live yoga sessions/at-home work-outs, sharing daily hygiene tips and skincare routines, discussing online safety & social media usage + more—all from the safety of their homes! All conversations will be monitored and kept on the topic by a Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Sudbury staff member.
